A little over a year ago, Comanche County Memorial Hospital started offering a detox program to those in the community. Since then, they’ve helped nearly 300 people.
For some, it’s difficult to stop drinking alcohol or using drugs, but there are ways to get clean. Latricia Murphy, New Vision Administration at CCMH, said if you’re struggling with a substance, she encourages you to take the first step.
“The first step is the hardest step, but it’s rewarding,” Murphy said. “If you can take the first step, I can help you with the second.”
Murphy said going through a detox program is typically required before someone can go to rehab. She said the program is covered by most major insurance groups.
“You can come in any day of the week,” Murphy said. “If you come to detox, I will meet you here to admit you. Normally, our office hours are from 8-5, but I am willing to come any day, any time to help those in need of detox.”
She said those admitted are required to have an IV just in case anything goes wrong, but people in the three-day program aren’t asked a lot of invasive questions. Murphy said they will ask the last day you used it just to make sure it’s safe to give you the medicine.
“It’s very chill – if that makes any sense,” she said. “You just relax while you’re here. We give you medication to help you withdraw. You can have visitors come and visit you. You can have your phone. It’s not a lockdown unit. It’s just a normal hospital stay that is helping you withdraw from substances and alcohol.”
Murphy said it’s been successful so far.
“We don’t have a lot of people who return,” she said. “If you’re intrinsically motivated, it’s usually a one-time thing. We’ll send you to rehab afterward. We’ll try to get you resources so you can have a successful journey after coming to detox.”
