Comanche County Memorial Hospital is using its simulation center to help people who aren’t in the healthcare field get a better idea of what it’s like in hopes of inspiring the next generation of healthcare professionals.

The hospital recently held a health care fair in the simulation center where people can learn about different health careers and tell them how to get started.

“This event is geared to high school students and also that mom or dad that has already got a career, and they’ve always wanted to go in a health career, but they didn’t know how to,” said Heather Love, the administrative director of quality, safety, risk, and education at CCMH.

She said it’s amazing to see what the mannequins can do.

“One of the wonderful things that we love about these mannequins is you can practice skills with these mannequins, and it’s a safe environment because I can learn something if I were to mess up, have an error, or anything like that we turn the mannequin off and turn it back on, and everything’s ok,” Love said.

Kylah Rucker, the Education Simulation Supervisor at CCMH, said it gives students and professionals an advantage because they can practice before they go on the floor or they can use the center to practice and improve their skills.

“So certain things that we’re not meeting a good – we’re not making the right decisions or we’re not doing well or we’re not following steps the best way, we can bring them to the stimulation and reiterate and help them to improve those skills,” Rucker said.

Love said it also lets healthcare professionals practice on things they usually don’t see to ensure they’re ready if it ever arises.

“We can also simulate those once-in-a-lifetime events that we may see,” Love said. “But like I said, we may see it once in a lifetime, we can simulate those events on these mannequins, and that way they can practice those.”

If you missed the most recent Operation Health Care Fair, and you’re interested in learning more about starting a career in the healthcare field, they’re having another one on May 1.
